In the 2011 The Smurfs live action film, the story is set in the Middle Ages where the evil wizard Gargamel discovers the Smurfs' village and chases them into a wooded area. Clumsy Smurf wanders into a 'forbidden' grotto when the Smurfs scatter and some of the others follow him in. A magical portal within the grotto transports them into present-day Central Park in New York since it was a blue moon. They must find a way back to their village before Gargamel finds them with the help of married couple Patrick and Grace Winslow who have become their newfound friends.
